One of my side projects for this year is to begin setting up my “home lab”. It will be a great learning experience, open hub a world of neat possibilities – and headaches.
There are a couple of drivers for this project
- I have a large (and growing) collection of digital music and video that I need something big and safe to back it up to.
- I’ve made some change to the corporate structure of how my business works, and this is a good time to look at having less stuff in the cloud.
- I’d like to have less reliance on US-based or US-owned services where my data is stored. Less on the cloud in general, if I can. This is both for improved data privacy, and cost.
- I want an environment to practice system administration and devops.
I’ll be starting it off with a MiniPC running Proxmox to host docker-based applications on my network. The components have started to arrive and I’ll be setting things up soon.
