Gander Social

Gander Social is a new social media network built by Canadians. Launched official on July 1st (Canada Day) this year, it has been in beta since January.

Built on the AT Protocol (the same technology as Bluesky), and hosted on sovereign infrastructure they’ll calling Gander Wingspan.

Until today, the network was only available as a mobile app on iOS and Android devices. Today a web-based version was finally launched, making it more convenient to use than every before.

Gander is a breath of fresh air in the social media space. First of all, having a network of Canadians changes the conversations. Last night, for example, it was a strong mix of discussions about the US-Canada Trade Disputes that collapsed this weekend, and the 10th anniversary of the Tragically Hip’s final show in Kingston.

It has no algorithm, isn’t trying to rage bait me, and has been full of people posting about their vacations, their pets, and issues important to them. Not full of ads from brands trying to get clicks with the latest trend.

Around Canada Day, it was quoted as having approximately 18,000 users in the beta test. I’m looking forward to seeing how the web-based interface changes that.

If you’re there, look me up. I’m @shawnhooper.

Disclaimer: I am an early (very small) investor in Gander Social through their crowdfunded equity campaign of about 2,500 Canadians.
